Kevin Costner’s Feelings Went Beyond a Hollywood Partnership

Kevin Costner's own words make one thing clear: Whitney Houston was never just a famous co-star to him. Their relationship began with The Bodyguard, but his memories of her continued to carry emotional weight decades later.

In a 2024 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Costner reflected on his decision to cast Whitney. Speaking about her, he said:

“I loved her. It’s not like this giant mystery. So I knew that she should be the one.”

The comment has understandably attracted attention. However, Costner was speaking about choosing Whitney for The Bodyguard, not publicly confirming a romantic relationship between them. What his words do show is genuine affection and certainty that he saw something special in her from the beginning.

He said: “She was a very important person to me and the world has connected us in a way that we'll never not be.”

Costner explained that he did not fully understand the depth of that connection until the period surrounding Whitney's funeral. Their shared history had always existed, but her death made him look at that history differently.

That may be one of the most revealing things Kevin Costner has ever said about Whitney Houston. He did not describe their relationship using labels such as “true love,” and there is no reliable evidence that they were romantically involved.
